Answering Dr. King’s Call: Creating Solutions for Workplace Microaggressions

  • Karis D. Townsend

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s call to serve others inspired Konversations with Karis—a space to educate, empower, and uplift professionals facing workplace microaggressions.

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"  - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King's question challenges us to reflect on how we uplift others. For me, this reflection led to the creation of Konversations with Karis—a platform born from personal experiences and the need for real solutions to workplace microaggressions.

The Journey That Led to Change
Throughout my career, I’ve faced microaggressions in almost every workplace. These weren’t isolated incidents but a cumulative pattern that impacted my mental health.

From dismissive comments to subtle exclusions, intentional and unintentional, these experiences left me feeling stressed, unseen, undervalued, and, ultimately, unwell.

When I sought support, I was presented with two options:

  1. Medication, which only worsened my physical health.

  2. Short-term disability, a solution that felt punitive and career-limiting for something I didn’t cause.

I realized there wasn’t a resource that truly addressed the challenges I faced. This gap fueled my passion to create Konversations with Karis, a resource to educate, empower, and uplift professionals navigating these daily challenges.

Learn, Apply, Thrive: A Mission Inspired by Service
Dr. King’s call to serve others is the foundation of our mission. At Konversations with Karis, we:

  • Educate individuals and teams about microaggressions, helping them understand their impact.

  • Apply actionable strategies to navigate these challenges effectively.

  • Thrive by empowering professionals to maintain their mental health and succeed despite the obstacles they face.

What Are You Doing for Others?
As we reflect on Dr. King’s legacy, I encourage organizations and individuals to think about how they can support participation and mental well-being in the workplace. How can your business ensure that employees feel valued and respected?

For me, the answer is clear: creating spaces where people are empowered to thrive. If your workplace is ready to take the next step, join us at our next Workplace Resilience Workshop. [Dates and details to be announced shortly, sign up below to receive updates].
